SEATTLE, Dec. 06, 2006 -- The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] and Deutsche Lufthansa AG today announced the carrier ordered 20 747-8 Intercontinental jetliners plus 20 purchase rights. Lufthansa is the first airline to place an order for the passenger version of the fuel-efficient airplane.

The Lufthansa order, with a total average list-price value of $5.5 billion, is scheduled for delivery beginning in 2010. This order is a primary component of the airline's plan to modernize its fleet and increase environmental stewardship.

"Lufthansa operates one of the youngest and most environmentally friendly fleets in the world," said Scott Carson, president and chief executive officer, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The 747-8 will use state-of-the-art technology innovations from the 787 Dreamliner to significantly increase the capabilities of Lufthansa's fleet. This airplane improves upon the economics of the 747-400, while greatly enhancing fuel efficiency, reducing emissions and noise. We are thrilled that this world-class airline has chosen this world-class airplane."

The 747-8 will reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 16 percent compared to the 747-400s it will replace. It also will meet and exceed the nitrogen-oxide regulations being incorporated by the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection.

That's a slap in the face of Airbus, a well deserved one!

Re: Boeing 747-8 Finally ordered!!!!

The 747 is such a legend I don't know how the A380 can ever compare. I hope Airbus sorts out its problem soon - its cash cow, the A380, is becoming a liability with delayed orders and angry customers.

what does this really mean?
does this mean that the Airline buisness is on a upswing in the coming years?
and that it might finally be leaving the post 9/11 depression?

Well, it means that Lufthansa is replacing its aging 747-400 fleet with both 747-800 and A380 instead of just A380. A move that propably didn't make the Airbus management too happy..

Re: Boeing 747-8 Finally ordered!!!!

Well this is not a slap in the face to Airbus to the 3 post that said it which was marcei. If you think it is then you can explain yourself.

It is foolish to say such a statement, espcially when Lufthansa has orders for the A380 as well. They are filling the gap between the 747 and A380 and the new 747 does that well. In addition to this the 777-3 would have been good enough, but maybe Boeing tweaked some numbers or there was a consensus on behalf of the 747-8.

so they are only replacing..meaning that they dont see the demand for extending their fleet..
so bad days are still upon the airline industry

No no no. They are being proactive. They know that the current 747-400 fleet they have is getting old and by the time the 747-800 is ready to be delivered to them they will be in the process of getting rid of SOME of the 747-4. The point here is for them to continue to stay on top of the game and this means fuel efficiency, more passengers, improved techonology, and lighter materials. The 747-8 will be a great plane and Lufthansa has realized this. If anything they are going to make their fleet grow with the order of A340-600's and the current orders for the A380. So, adding on the 747-8 is a good thing because their fleet will grow and they will have a diverse fleet good enough for all their needs.

Check this out: [i]Lufthansa expands and modernises long-range fleet
Supervisory Board approves orders for 27 new aircraft

06.12.06
At its meeting today, the Lufthansa Supervisory Board approved orders for a total of 27 new aircraft. Twenty of those orders are for new long-range Boeing 747-8 jets, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2010. A further seven Airbus A340-600 long-haul aircraft will be joining the fleet from 2008. Lufthansa has also taken out options on a further twenty of the B747-8 type. With the order placements, Lufthansa is underpinning its planned growth in intercontinental traffic and, simultaneously, replacing some of the existing aircraft in the fleet.
