What is it about United?

You know, I have been a great fan of United Airlines for many years. I hope, if they do merge with US Airways, that the name is kept. However, I see at airliners.net people consistently putting United down and wishing for its end. I wonder why?

Recently when CO announced that they were not going to merge with United almost everyone was happy. Why?

I thought United was of the best carriers out there.

Additionally, Glenn Tilton is constantly being put down.

Re: What is it about United?

I believe this is because the employees and people in general are not happy with the way the company is managed. The employees especially haven't had a very good relationship with the management since the 1985 strike.

The enormous cuts on jobs and operations during Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection were very painful. In 2005 they canceled their pension plan and renegotiated contracts with pilots' and mechanics' unions for lower pay. While demanding lower pays for the employees, Tilton himself was paid the highest salary for any major US airline CEO.

Things haven't really turned for the better for the company. United just posted a huge loss and their financial situation is perhaps the worst of the remaining 4 major airlines.

These are the things that I believe might be the underlying reason for most of the negativity towards United.

You bring up a good point. I think the aforementioned lends itself to the complete picture of United's state. I did not know the holt Tilton salary right off the bat, but now that I think about it I can remember something to that effect.

I like United and what it stood for and I am sure the employees feel the same. I hope that it can turn around but if that is not the case then I guess fate ultimately decide what will happen.
