ADAC “Yellow Angel” Prize 2006 for Audi's CEO.

ADAC “Yellow Angel” Prize 2006 for Audi's Dr. Winterkorn

The Chairman of the Board of Management at AUDI AG, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, was today awarded the ADAC “Yellow Angel” Prize 2006 in Munich. Winterkorn received the prestigious prize in the “Personality” category.

The ADAC jury justified their decision by citing the Audi boss’s “outstanding achievements” in the car industry. They said that Winterkorn had established Audi as a premium brand worldwide and had successfully positioned numerous new vehicle models on the market, vehicles that stood out on account of their technical innovations and appealing design.

Speaking in honour of Martin Winterkorn, Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, CEO of Porsche AG and recipient of the prize in 2005, was unstinting in his praise. “This prize honours Martin Winterkorn as one of the best managers that our industry has. He has set the correct course at Audi. Dr. Winterkorn, you’re doing an extremely good job!”

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn remarked, “The prize is a tribute to all Audi employees. These accolades and the positive feedback from customers show that we are on the right track.” Winterkorn went on to say that Audi would continue with this successful approach in the coming years with a wealth of stunning innovations.

The ADAC “Yellow Angel” Prize 2006 was awarded at a ceremony attended by 400 high-ranking guests from politics and industry in the five categories “Car”, “Brand”, “Quality”, “Innovation” and “Personality”.

Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn has been Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG since 1 March 2002. He is Head of the Audi brand group, including the brands Audi, SEAT and Lamborghini, which was formed on 1 January 2002. In addition to this Winterkorn became responsible for Technical Development at AUDI AG from 1 January 2003. In his capacity as Chairman of the Board of Management at AUDI AG, Winterkorn is also a Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG.

Winterkorn was born on 24 May 1947 in Leonberg. He studied metallurgy and metal physics at the University of Stuttgart and was awarded his Doctorate by the Max Planck Institute for Metal Research. In 1981 Winterkorn joined AUDI AG as assistant to the Member of the Board for Quality Assurance. Two years later he was appointed Head of the “Metrology/Prototype Delivery and Test Lab”. At the beginning of 1988 he was made departmental Head of "Central Quality Assurance", and in 1990 Head of Audi Quality Assurance. In 1993 Winterkorn became Head of “Group Quality Assurance” at Volkswagen AG and was appointed General Manager of VOLKSWAGEN AG with power of attorney in March 1994. He was additionally responsible for VW Group Product Management from June 1995. In January 1996 Winterkorn took over as Member of the Brand Board of Management for “Technical Development” at the Volkswagen brand. From July 2000 he was Member of the VW Group Board of Management for “Research and Development”.

In 2003 Winterkorn was awarded the title of Honorary Professor by the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. On 1 August 2004 he was appointed Honorary Professor of Dresden University of Technology in the specialist area of “Lightweight materials in automobile construction”.
