It's the character of the car that is more important, both in the driving style and the interior appointments.

The S lineups are powerful cars for people who like that, but in a more discreet (one of the reasons I like Audi in the first place is that their styling and branding is already more discreet than Mercedes' and BMW's) and still somewhat comfort oriented package. The RS lineup is as much of a performance car as any, really, and suitable enough for the track as almost any production car, although I would really say that no roadgoing car is ready for the track straight from the showroom floor.

I suppose I partly echo what Merc1 said, only that I think wagons also have an essential part to play in the lineup, even as RS versions - wagons are apparently far more popular in Europe than in many places, America and Australia included. It makes sense for them to have those cars there, as much sense as a M5 Touring makes.

I think that playing to the MB and BMW paradigm of having only one 'upmarket performance version' is unnecessary and possibly even silly. Why play their game, whether with more bang for the buck, outright lower prices, or otherwise? Cynics may say that it's dooming Audi to failure to play the established brands' game on their own turf, but I say that despite that, it's a matter of principle. Audi should just do their own thing.

The only suggestion I would make is to speed up the development for the RS models. Maybe it serves the purpose of keeping up interest in whatever particular model range, but nobody wants to wait that long, really. Anyhow, I am of the opinion that both the RS and the S models have a significant part to play in Audi's range.

Beautifully said!!!

I understand your reasoning and after much thought agree with you but am split between my view and yours.

The one thing that seperates the RS GMBH and the S division is the time spent on the vehicles. I heard once from an Audi tech that the S version is an A4 with a bigger engine and nicer suspension and different seats. Of course you have your miner changes, but the RS is truly changed all around like the M versions of BMW are.

Either way I am somewhat lying when I say that I would like to ban S, because if I was in the market I would definitely want an S4 and probably wouldnt' be able to get the RS4. However, I really would like to be able to acquire the RS4 and pay less, if there was no lower division. 0.02 cents

Re: Audi RS cars...

Ok, cool, I suppose. I can understand where you're coming from, also, where if you do compare the Audi upper range models to their BMW and MB equivalents, then you are sort of getting a different car for your money, especially if it's not the top of the range. I suppose Audi has every right to price their cars how they want, but you can be sure that many car fans are asking the same question as you, 'why are their top cars more expensive?'.

In a way, maybe if Audi's cars were more reasonably priced, then it wouldn't matter if they had the S and RS lines; it would be just like having a separate, different model naming system for the 335i when it comes out - a differentiation of the penultimate model. However, their pricing invites comparison with the competitors, often to their detriment. I guess that the upshot is that the RS4 will continue to be a rare beast, something that being a famous, good value car (M3, C55, etc.) doesn't necessarily entail.

The S4 would be the car that I would likely own, of the two, but I can't help admiring the RS4. As you say, the S4 might be an uber-Audi, but the RS4 is engineered much differently. Just looking at the sheetmetal, I think most panels are different - the wheel arches are flared, the bootlid spoiler flows into the rear three-quarter panels (instead of tapering off at the edges like the S4/S-line models), and the side sills being different. I love sheetmetal changes - for a start, it makes it hard to get ricer-style cheap replicas - so I sort of respect the time it takes for them to make these models, though it's still unfortunate.

Well, I suppose that, in addition to making them available earlier, perhaps Audi could make the price gap of the RS models compared to the competition to be narrower than it is now.

Re: Audi RS cars...

Snake Vargas I must say that personally I think that Audi's are somewhat reasonably priced. So what that said it gives way for many more customers to go to Audi because of that. That is why, I think (and I may be rationally wrong in my thinking) that if Audi were to do away with the S division and have the RS lineup which in fact would be the highest engineered sports care of its line up they would win more customers. You see if they do away with the S division that will cut costs and therefore, hopefully, lower the cost on the msrp of the RS cars making them a bargain when you compare them to the AMG and M division. Audi is looking better and better every day, so if that were to happen I would go with the RS division rather than, what seems at times, overpriced M division or AMG
