Ok I have only seen A5 tdi and not the S5 but I wasnt impressed how A5 looked. I seen the R8 and its sex on wheels. Drop dead gorgeous My vote goes to R8....

Damn this is a tough one! I'm going with the S5 because it's newer and I have such huge expectations for it! The R8 already murdered everything north of 200K, there's nothing left to prove!

For me, it's the R8. Not because of its looks, but because of its performance. I just finished reading the July issue of Evo Magazine. They tested the R8 against the 911 C4S, BMW M6, and Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Guess who won the test? Evo has proclaimed the R8 as the new king of its segment.

Even though the S5 looks mighty fine, its performance is a bit dissapointing. I'm not sure it even outperforms the old E46 M3 or C55 AMG, not to mention the new M3 and C63.

You expected it to? It wasn't created to topple those cars! It's purpose is to be a luxury coupe with a hint of high performance capabilities if my understanding is correct. But you can be sure that the RS5 will fill all the gaps left by the S5!

Before the mighty B7 RS4 came out, the B6/7 S4 was the main competitor against the M3 and C32/C55. They were often compared against one another in car magazines. (Car & Driver, Road & Track, Motortrend, etc). The S4 was consistently a step behind those cars in terms of performance.

Then BMW came out with the relatively cheap 335i, whose huge performance suddenly put itself into "big boy" territory. Then suddenly, the Audi S4 (and now S5) suddenly fell down a notch in status and became a 335i rival instead. At the same time, the very expensive RS4 came out too, which was suddenly compared to the old E46 M3 and C55.

Funny how the Audi S cars move in and out of segments in terms of competition with rivals, at least from auto enthusiasts' points of view. I wonder if Audi views it the same way.

From a price point of view, the B7 S4 is still priced way above the 335i (just slightly cheaper than the now discontinued E46 M3 and W203 C55). And by the look of things, the new S5 will be priced similarly.

Well my take on the whole S/RS vs. M and AMG models goes like this. Audi's S models compete against BMW and Mercedes top of the line none M and AMG models. Where Audi's RS models are pinned against the Mercedes AMG and BMW's M models. But that's just my take on it.
