Re: Not Rear wheel drive...

I wished we had such advertising rivalry here, it would be so interesting to watch the carmakers chide each other.

Re: Not Rear wheel drive...

Wha...! BMW has a high-performance SUV?!? How, what, where, when?

Last I heard, BMW had ditched "Utility" in favour of Aerobics or Pilates or Yoga or some other form of "Activity"...

Re: Not Rear wheel drive...

The allroad "quattro" is also Aerobics or Pilates or Yoga or some other form of "Activity"... it ain't no WRC car that's for sure.

And the Q7 ain't no Defender or Hilux.

But all this is non-sense.

Re: Not Rear wheel drive...

The Q7, whilst not as rugged as its Touareg sister car (now that thing really is a capable SUV) by virtue of its longer wheelbase is still a moderately competent vehicle on rough dirt tracks and sand.

The allroad is a convetional station wagon (Audi does in no way purport this car to be a sport-anything vehicle) with all of the on-road benefits on lower mass, lower frontal area, better drag co-efficient, lower centre of gravity, car-like handling and better fuel consumption. Combined with a nifty 185 mm of lift-mode ground clearance for that little dirt road excursion cars like the Audi allroad are the thinking man's lifestyle vehicle.

Re: Not Rear wheel drive...

But still far from the real deal.
It's simply that some are more lifestyle than others, rather that one is the real deal while the other isn't.

And LR/RR 4x4 than can play in the mud, rarely do, because they're bought by "soccer moms" and/or divorced women or execs. who don't know the meaning of mud.

For me, if it ain't a tank, Hilux/Defender or "killer bee", it ain't the real thing.
OK I'll add Subaru Foresters to make you happy too.

Amazing how childish BMW and Audi grown ups can be.

Re: Not Rear wheel drive...

Very kind of you - but sadly a Forester is decidedly soft when compared with Cruisers, Defenders and the like!

So I guess you're right, it's all really down to varying degrees of what is truly useful and what's actually just designed to appeal to the tastes of the well heeled consumer.
