Proton's strategic partner to be decided by Q1 2007, says Malaysia PM

KUALA LUMPUR (XFN-ASIA) - A decision on Proton's strategic partner will be known by the first quarter of 2007, Bernama news agency quoted Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as saying.

Second Finance Minister Mohamed Yakcop said last month that the government was talking only to France's PSA Peugeot (other-otc: PEUGY.PK - news - people ) Citroen and Germany's Volkswagen AG on a strategic alliance with Proton Holdings Bhd.

Speaking at a press conference after launching the BioMalaysia 2006 conference, Abdullah also confirmed that the Naza group is interested in acquiring a stake in Proton Holdings, Bernama said.

The government's investment arm, Khazanah Nasional Bhd, owns 43 pct interest in the national car maker.

Naza Group's chief executive officer Nasimuddin SM Amin was reported to have said that his company was keen to take over the 43 pct stake.
