Re: Artists & Paintings

Thank you very much for the kind compliments Bruce ...but really I am not greatly knowledgeable about most things.

I really love Modern Art very much ...particularly sculpture, it has been a fascination of mine since I was a very young boy. I remember as a child I was almost obsessed with a book about Picasso's sculptures ....I would try to make copies of them out of paper.

My father is a big fan of Margaret Shelton (see below).

He's got an original copy of both of these particular woodcuts

"Fishing on the Bow" - 1945

Homestead at Revelstoke, 1942

While I greatly appreciate her art, the overall style and themes don't appeal to me. Generally, I prefer a more cartoonish style (like Harris or Mell).

Having said that, I love this one she's done...

Dogtown in July, Rosedale, Alberta, 1949
Oil on board

Re: Artists & Paintings

Very good Bruce, I like your choices very much. You appear to like wide landscapes and dynamic compositions.

I am particularly interested in this woodcut:

^^This is very interesting ...I immediately thought of the 19th century Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai ...I love the clarity of the lines and the fantastic composition Very nice Bruce.

Re: Artists & Paintings

Egon Schiele (1890-1918) is one of the most original and brilliant artists of his time. Many of his drawings and paintings verge on being pornographic ... I will only post G rated pictures . - ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

When I first encountered it, I didn't really like it too much (his figures are often quite grotesque) ...but I have come to appreciate the beauty of it, the dynamic compositions are particularly impressive ...and his drawing skills are exemplary.

It really is a fantastic piece isn't it? Haven't heard of Katsushika Hokusai before, but I'll be sure to take a look.

Ooooh.. strange stuff. As you said, his characters are quite grotesque, but interesting nevertheless! Egon's self portraits are equally interesting.

Thanks Rob

More Sybil Andrews stuff..

Love this one..

This one (entitled "Speedway") is just brilliant.

I really like her style on this particular picture as I believe it challenges the mind. The meaning is clear, but I'd by lying if I didn't say every first glance of the painting reminds me of a set of jackhammers or screw/nails.

Now look at this one...

Entitled: "Mother and Son"

Re: Artists & Paintings

My favourite is The Kiss by Gustav Klimt.
It is part of our home decor ( a reproduction of course)
