Lincoln offering $8,000 in rebates on outgoing LS sedan

DETROIT -- Topped by a doubling of the maximum customer rebate on the Lincoln LS sedan, Ford Motor Co. pushed several of its buyer bonuses upward last week. The LS giveback now is $4,000 to $8,000; it had been $3,000 to $4,000.

Next in line is the Lincoln Town Car, which brings $6,500 to $7,000. The low end is up $500.

Rebates were increased $500 on the Ford F-150 and Lincoln Mark LT pickups. The giveback rose $1,000 on the Ford Explorer SUV and Crown Victoria sedan and $1,500 on the Lincoln Navigator SUV. The Ford Focus payment was reduced $1,000, and $500 was lopped off the rebates on the Mercury Mariner and Mountaineer SUVs and Montego and Grand Marquis sedans.

Finance rates were reduced on a range of nameplates. Ford Motor incentives are set to expire July 31.

It is a sorry state for American automanufactures. The last time I bought an American car was 1993. A 93 Z28 with 275hp. It wasn't a bad car but it didn't take long for a lot of creaks and rattles to show up.

Alot of units too move seems like what they have to do to move them...

Lincoln has done this all of its time on outgoing models. Nothing new here.

The scary thing for me is that the Australian manufacturers might soon be up the same alley. I suppose the difference is that we don't have the deep pockets to offer such rebates.

Ford and Holden are geared largely towards making large 6 or 8 cylinder sedans, though Ford can also build a SUV based on its sedan platform, Mitsubish's local arm only makes one car, a large 6 cylinder sedan (variant of the US Galant), and Toyota at least will be making a 4 cylinder Camry as well as a larger 6 cylinder platform shared sedan.

Large sedan sales are decreasing steadily. Makers remain hopeful in press releases, as they would, but even some admit the market is declining. Small car sales have shot through the roof.

The problem is that they've gained so much momentum building cars that belong to another era, and lack the resources, ability or the will to change direction. Time will tell what happens.
