Re: BMW Individual 760 Li: Girard-Perregaux Edition

just a couple questions about the watch thing. What materials do they use? And are they hand built?

Certainly not the caliber of brand I like to see partnered with BMW.

Anyways, stupid tie-in, beautiful interior.
Well, I never said that the watch was worth the money...just that it is still decent looking. For $5,000 I wouldn't even buy a rolex either though, simply because Rolex is synonimous (spelling?) with rich, snobby people. Plus, it's just too much bling, bling. What I'd rather buy is a Tag Heuer (spelling?) Chronograph or a Carl Bucherer (spelling?) watch. Those are simple beautiful watches without the bling bling...except may be Bucherer, there is some bling and its good bling!

Anyways, if this brand is overpriced. Why did BMW choose to go with them?

$5,000 is quite a bargain for G-P.

Prices for their chronos can go very north of that figure:

Re: BMW Individual 760 Li: Girard-Perregaux Edition

A thing about inlays - can anyone tell me what are they for? Personally, I won't think of putting inlays into my trim, it creates a 'discordant' effect that I don't particularly fancy. I've always thought people chose to put inlays to show that they can afford to pay the immense costs of moulding different woods/materials together, instead of just a chunk of the same material.

Do you mean the metal strip with the engraving "Girard-Perregaux" into the wood trim? I think its only purpose is to create a distinct and sophisticated look... it's very nice IMO! Of course you're right about the higher cost of blending these materials together, but I think people pay more for the 'Individual' aspect of the car (the beauty of these materials), not for showing off with the inlays...
More or less the same thing was done with the wood in the 7er Individual edition "Yachtline", where they carved out lines into the wood (or maybe it was a different-colored wood, I don't know actually):

And in the 760Li, the V12 model, a special wood inlay distincts it from lower positioned I6- and V8-models:

It's done to say: "Hey, this is a special model!" on the one hand and to create a luxury look and feel on the other hand.

I think inlays are attractive because of the old-world craftsmanship involved. It's not unlike having a grand complication wristwatch; you're getting a level of complexity that has a very steep barrier of entry.

Personally, I find the inlays in the 7er very attractive because they compliment the lines of the interior and manage to add some "status decoration" without breaking theme too much. It's on the edge of taste in such a modern car, but I think it works very good.
