a higher cylinder count does not equal more power, in fact it can often lead to less as you have more moving parts which equals more friction and inertia to overcome. I don't think that BMW necessarily needs to make the next M5 have an increase in power like what happened in the case of the e39 to e60. Rather, I'm hoping that BMW works on reducing the weight of their cars, which they have started to do with carbon fiber and lightweight plastic body panels on the M6. I would expect the next M5 to again have a 5 liter V10, maybe 5.5 liters, but use direct injection and perhaps debut camless technology to improve HP. Also, with gas prices on the rise, these two technologies are certainly needed. Both improve MPG on top of HP figures. My M5 gets on average 12 mpg! I don't even want to think what the MPG figure would be with an extra liter of displacement.
