more info here 'Photocopying led to Ferrari investigation' - Planet-F1 News - from planet-f1.com

Suspicions over Mike Coughlan's role in Stepneygate may have been sparked when an eagle-eyed shop assistant spotted Ferrari badges on documents he sought to photocopy at a commercial printing shop in Woking.

Ferrari confirmed on Thursday that they had only begun legal action against Coughlan, McLaren's chief designer, after a tip-off from 'a third party outside Formula One racing'.

'The latest speculation, from sources close to Ferrari but not officially denied by the Scuderia, is that Coughlan may have aroused suspicion by taking the bundle of Ferrari documents to a photocopying shop within the past two weeks. According to one source, the shop assistant noticed the documents were classified and were stamped with Ferrari's famous Prancing Horse badge and this person may have informed Ferrari,' reports The Times.

With F1's rumour-mill in full swing, the newspaper speculates that the espionage scandal 'featured far more classified material than was first thought'.

Up to 500 pages of information were allegedly passed on by Nigel Stepney, Ferrari's disenchanted mechanic, to Coughlan, 'providing him with a comprehensive picture of Ferrari's activities on the track and in the design studio.' The package reputedly 'included technical details and performance data on the Ferrari F2007, this season's race car, information about key engineers, details of race strategies, the preparation of cars, development plans for the future, test results and standards used in quality control.'

The exchange allegedly took place at Port Ginesta in Spain, in late April when the two teams were both testing in Barcelona.

Why can't they take digital photos of the documents intead of photocopying it in a commercial photocopying shop, can't he even do it at home intead?
