A classic among Finnish war flicks is Tuntematon sotilas (The Unknown Soldier) from 1955. Another popular (but very long) choice is Talvisota (Winter War) from 1989. These are definitely not your typical Hollywood stuff, and you might need some knowledge of the historical events to understand them... For something a bit more recent, there's Rukajärven tie (literally The Road to Rukajärvi, but known in English as Ambush).

Åke Lindman has previously directed one war film, Etulinjan edessä - framom främsta linjen (Beyond the Front Line) in 2004, but I haven't seen it yet. He also acted in Tuntematon sotilas.

Post-WW2, Finland didn't have too much money to throw around, and apparently no one was too eager to sell fighter jets to a neutral country (with a very long border with the Soviet Union) either. Luckily things have changed since.
