12 years ago, the Sega Saturn had theoretically more powerful hardware than the PlayStation, but because of the parallel processors and the inefficiency of addressing it with C programming, it was an absolute chore for developers. When the games delivered, they were awesome (like Virtua Fighter 2). But for the most part, the 3D offerings were overshadowed by the more consistent library of games available for the PlayStation.

The issues that developers are having with the Cell processor might be a nonissue if the PlayStation hits the critical mass that makes it a lucrative platform for 3rd parties. On the other hand, if Sony's sales still trail by a wide margin after Christmas 2007, it may be too late.

The race is still wide open. I really can't predict where Wii and PS3 will be one year from now, but for now it looks like Sony has plenty to worry about. Especially critical is that Wii has been a hit in its native country, which means alot for 3rd party support.
