New Audi CEO Targets Sales, Service Network

DETROIT - New Audi CEO Rupert Stadler sees improving the carmaker's sales and service network as one of his core tasks.

Audi must ensure that the brand's retail and repair outlets offer a premium standard, Stadler said.

Audi, the Volkswagen's group's premium brand, has been working to increase stand-alone stores after being dualed with Volkswagen and other brands.

Stadler saud Audi is on target to reach its goal of 1.4 million global sales by 2015. Last year, Audi sold a record 905,100 vehicles, 76,000 more than in 2005.

"One million units is just around the corner," Stadler said this month at the Detroit auto show.

Stadler took over as Audi CEO on Jan. 1, the same day that his predecessor, Martin Winterkorn, took over as VW group CEO.

Stadler is still cautious about selecting new production models. He declined to say whether the Roadjet crossover concept shown at the 2006 Detroit auto show will be built.

"There are other projects that are more important to us and can be carried out more quickly," he said.

Audi's next models will be the A5 coupe, based on the A4, and the Q5 SUV.

Stadler, who remains Audi's finance chief until the end of the year, also wants to pay more attention to profitability: Growth without better returns doesn't make sense."
