Well they are not dead yet. I think their sales are picking up in Europe because of the popularity of their bio-fuel engines. Their cars are often underated. We used to have a Saab, and it was a good car. It was comfortable, practical, safe and fast enough. They might lack the showroom appeal but they are well designed cars, you will realise it after you live with one.
Saab's current lineup is competely duff right now because of GM. Saab needs something to set them apart, something like their variable compression ratio egnines. I am still waiting for GM to put in more funding and bring the engine to the market. GM need to make the Saab badge desirable, as well as improving product quality. People choose to buy a basic 320i or a C180K over a well equiped and cheaper Saab 9-3 because they want that badge, not becaues they want a better car.
