For MB design standards yes, especially the CLS which was a significant departure from what we usually expect from them. But in terms of the automotive industry as a whole I don't think they are all that innovative mainly because they like to play it safe
most of the time.
They took a design risk with the CLS and it paid off. Same cannot be said for the R-class though.
I don't think that any one manufacturer is the leader. There are a number of company's who are the trendsetters.. but an outright leader I don't think is possible in today's dynamic market where customer tastes in terms of design are so varied.
