I think Mercedes SUV's have a history of having slightly detuned engines compared to their sedan counterparts. It could be because of a slightly more restrictive exhuast or perhaps to obtain better emmissions (to try and get in all 50 states).
I don't get the feeling that BLUETEC affects the performance as it's only injected every-so-often into the exhaust stream and not the engine itself.
Edit: It looks like it does, unless Europe has a different kind of diesel fuel. Normal E320 CDI (still sold in Europe) 224hp, E320 BLUETEC 208hp; the normal GL320 CDI has 215hp, I don't know what the BLUETEC version will have.
