Reithofer confirms 1er model range for U.S.

Taken from an Autoweek interview w/ the new CEO of BMW

Quote:
Where is the movement in America? Into something like the 1 series?

We realize the market in the United States is changing. We will definitely bring the 1 series to the United States, but it will not be a hatchback. We have a 3-series model range, coupe, sedan, station wagon - and you can have something like that for the 1 series.
This is quite different from what all of the "sources" have been saying as of late. It makes perfect sense at the same time, since the 3er is moving upward price wise to where the 5er sits, then the 5er carving out it's own niche in the future as a more specialized vehicle w/ coupe like design. The 1er range will bridge the gap between Mini and BMW here in the U.S.

Like said many times before: cabrio & coupe variants coming first. Other variants incl. sedan possible with Mk2 platform.

Re: Reithofer confirms 1er model range for U.S.

The 1er being reffered to is the 2nd generation model . The current generation of the E87 will be available in the USA as a coupe and cabrio only .
When the second generation comes I am sure it will be offered in more body styles. The current generation 1er sedan was axed because of it's close proximity to lower end 3er sedan. In which in most countries the lower engined 3er heavily treads into mass market family sedan segment.

So w/ that said, the 3er will indeed be moving further upmarket in the future??? And the 5er becoming more a niche car like the CLS???

I'm curious, how their definition of the Station wagon is different from the hatchback?

No. The 5er is BMWs biggest money maker and will never become a niche model. The 6er is there for that spot. No need for a CLS like 5er.

I know this, just trying to make sense of an entire 1er model range including sedan and touring.

Re: Reithofer confirms 1er model range for U.S.

It makes a lot of sense to me already, in the current line-up. BMW is taking an awefully long time to broaden the 1er line. I'm sure there are tons of people just dying to get their hands on a 2 series with 3.2 I6 ///M engine, weighing around 1200/1300 kg and being very compact.

Re: Reithofer confirms 1er model range for U.S.

I rather have new 130i engine with M threatment (throttle bodies) and min 320hp and 8000 rpm

That engine is much lighter than the E46 m3 engine.

Yeah, well, maybe an updated version of the old M3 engine then, made out of magnesium and stuff, like the newest 3.0 I6...that would be absolutely brilliant.
